Raccoon Rabies Baiting

ACHD ANNUAL RACCOON RABIES VACINATION BAITING PROJECT

Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) raccoon rabies vaccination baiting project will be from July 25 through August 31, 2022. Bait will be spread by hand August 1 to August 5; aircraft, including helicopters and fixed-wing airplanes, will distribute bait through the duration of the project.

To reduce the risk of human cases of rabies, ACHD and the USDA Wildlife Services distribute vaccine baits throughout all areas of Allegheny County.  The risk of adverse effects to humans and animals due to exposure to the vaccine is minimal, but you are urged to avoid contact with the bait if possible.  If a stray bait must be removed, it should be picked up using rubber or latex gloves or a shovel.  Most of the baits will be consumed about five days after being distributed. People should tell their children to leave the baits alone. Pet owners are asked to keep their dogs and cats inside or on leashes so raccoons can eat the baits.

Tree over sidewalk

TREES AND SHRUBBERY EXTENDING OVER ROADS AND SIDEWALKS

Trees and shrubs must be kept trimmed so they do not impede street or sidewalk use, block fire hydrants, interfere with sight lines at intersections, or obstruct road signs from motorists view.  Sidewalks in particular need to be clear their full width and at least 80 inches in height (US standard residential door height).  Roadways have a national standard of 13 foot 6 inches minimum clearance
for all motor vehicles.
