Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) raccoon rabies vaccination baiting project will begin on Monday, July 25 through August 31, 2022. Bait will be spread by hand August 1 to August 5; aircraft, including helicopters and fixed-wing airplanes, will distribute bait through the duration of the project.
To reduce the risk of human cases of rabies, ACHD and the USDA Wildlife Services distribute vaccine baits throughout all areas of Allegheny County. The risk of adverse effects to humans and animals due to exposure to the vaccine is minimal, but you are urged to avoid contact with the bait if possible. If a stray bait must be removed, it should be picked up using rubber or latex gloves or a shovel. Most of the baits will be consumed about five days after being distributed. People should tell their children to leave the baits alone. Pet owners are asked to keep their dogs and cats inside or on leashes so raccoons can eat the baits.
